A perfect fall day meant Casey and Steven’s Locust Grove wedding celebration went off without a hitch. These two just wanted a huge party, lots of laughs, and crazy dancing–and that’s exactly what their day looked like!

When Steven and Casey reached out about photographing their Locust Grove wedding, they mentioned they liked to party and have fun. I didn’t realized HOW much until the day of their wedding.

The energy, enthusiasm, and pure noise their crew showed showcased just how much fun these two like to have. There was never a dull moment! Here’s what this unexpected historic Poughkeepsie wedding venue is like, with (naturally) tons of photos and a rundown of their wedding day.

Fall Weddings in Upstate NY

Weddings at Locust Grove are one of my favorites. The venue is so close to my house, and in walking distance to several hotels. But from the outside? It’s quite unexpected—and I’ve written about it before when picking this NY wedding venue as one of my Top 14 Unique Hudson Valley Wedding Venues.

One of the most bizarre things about this Hudson Valley wedding venue is that it’s an unexpected historical home and garden in the middle of industry/shopping. Scenic from the main road it is not. But scenic from the property—you got it. The bushes, trees, and visitor’s center provide a sound and beauty barrier that make you forget you’re right off the crowded street at all. In fact, it’s incredibly quiet, it’s beautiful, it changes with the seasons, and it’s convenient.

About Locust Grove State Historic Site

Locust Grove is an historic site and event/wedding venue in Poughkeepsie, NY. I remember going to it when I was just a kid—and it hasn’t changed much since then! It’s named after the many black locust trees around the property. These trees are quite common in Dutchess County and beyond.

It’s not intuitive that there’s a venue in this part of the Hudson Valley. In fact, if you search “Wedding locations near me,” chances are high that you won’t even realize this is a beautiful wedding venue unless you know it’s here, and know to zoom in on your map. And while the greater Poughkeepsie area isn’t a beauty hotspot, the moment you enter the doors and see the property, you’re off of bustling Rt. 9 and into quiet nature, with views of the Hudson River.

A large flower garden and vegetable garden, small museum, tours, trails, and homes are all on the 200-acre property.

The historic Locust Grove Estate and mansion were originally built for telegraph inventor Samuel Morse, and features an 1850s Italianate home (somewhat similar to the Italianate mansion that’s the focus of Arrow Park weddings across the river).

Exclusive Use of Property for All Weddings

Day-of, Locust Grove weddings get the entire estate to themselves, with VERY minimal staff. I mean this in a good way, as many wedding venues tend to be looking over your shoulder and overbearing. Here, you are allowed around the home and on the 5 miles of carriage trails (and the lovely bluff overlooking the river), though purchased tickets are needed to tour the mansion itself during opening hours. Other than that, go as you please when having your wedding here.

50-150 guests get to rent out the entire Locust Grove Event Center, and that includes exclusive use of the grounds (which close at 5pm for weddings and events), the West Gallery for all dinner and dancing, the bathrooms and dressing rooms, and hallways filled with art and information for guests. The parking lot is directly adjacent, with accessible access for anyone with mobility issues.

Getting Ready in Poughkeepsie

While many people get hotel rooms for getting ready, Locust Grove Estates has several options available—including the nearly-adjacent Greystone House option. A trail links Greystone with the main Locust Grove Event Venue, or you can drive the 1 minute there. Either way, this house has beautiful property with a small pond, cool architecture, lots of space, and a beautiful little atrium for getting ready. There are quite a few average Poughkeepsie hotels, but the space (plenty for an outside gathering/welcome party) is so lovely and private that you might as well book this house.

After getting ready and their first look, my second shooter and I were able to photograph their wedding party portraits and couples’ portraits around the property. You better believe I used that beautifully-lit atrium for some shots!

Casey & Steven’s Locust Grove Wedding Ceremony

Given that the fall leaves were in full bloom during Steven and Casey’s early-October wedding, they went minimal on decorations. The orange/yellow foliage made for a most colorful backdrop.

One cool element from their fall wedding was the presence of unique bells—yes, small handbells—placed on random guest’s seats out on the main garden lawn. This is an Irish tradition I’ve been seeing more of in 2024-2025, and the bells (at the bottom of this page) were quite beautiful and unique!

Cocktail hour and fall photos at LGNY

After their wedding ceremony, we took family portraits and captured cocktail hour, which featured a mobile wine and beer bar, massive grazing board, and full bar. It all took place on the partially covered outdoor terrace.

For cocktail hour at LGNY (Locust Grove New York, which is also their website), guests have an entire area for hanging out or roaming around the gardens, and the terrace helps protect food (okay, and people) in case of showers.

One thing to keep in mind if planning a fall wedding at Locust Grove is that the gardens are completely finished by fall. This means that there will be no rows of roses, pumpkins, or blooms to walk through in the garden (though the fall foliage provides more than enough color around the property).

The bride, Casey, works as an environmental biologist, and loves nature (naturally). She had requested a photo on the ground, with leaves all around them. Of course, when I arrived, an amazing reddish-orange maple stood right in front of their venue, so we quickly took them out for some funky portraits.

Wedding Receptions at Locust Grove–Bringing the Energy!

Once the reception started, the couple was FULLY in their element. Their beloved Mets flag came out, DJ Dave from A Perfect Blend Entertainment started spinning, and the party just got wilder and wilder.

There was no lacking of energy, and these two—plus their huge wedding party and groups of friends—partied well into the night. With a parent anniversary, a cake cutting near-miss (you’ll see the shot), and a game of limbo with their flag, the antics and fun photo ops never stopped.

Casey and Steven, here’s to you two always keeping things fun, entertaining, and full of your delightful energy! ~
